A day in the life of a Victorian Parlour maid, or is it really worth going to bed! 6 am – Rise out of bed, have a quick wash, dress, and put up my hair into a bun. 6.30 am – Go down stairs. Pull up the blinds and open the window. Put the kettle on and start to clean the fireplaces. 7 am – Make two lovely cups of tea and take them to the Master and Mistress. 7.30 am – Thoroughly clean the dining room before setting it for breakfast. 8 am – Prepare, and serve breakfast. Followed by, washing all the pots and pans. 8.30 am – Go up to the chambers and strip the beds, air the room bye opening the entire window. Then it’s time for my own breakfast. 9 am – Put on a new apron and thoroughly clean the kitchen. Do a variety of chores including, making the beds, cleaning the taps, clean the baths and toilets and all the bedroom floors. Wow and its all got to be done by 12oclock. 12.00 – Quickly get changed in order to serve lunch. Lay the table, serve lunch, clear the table, and wash up all the silver and glass, then put everything back in its place. 1.00pm - Scrub the pantry floor and sink, and then have my lunch. 2.00 pm – 6 pm – During this time each day I will do a different chore around the house, maybe washing brushes and combs or cleaning the ornaments and silver. 6 pm – Set the table for dinner. 7 pm – Dish up the dinner and wait at the table. 8.30 pm – Tidy away the dinner dishes and wash up. 10.00 pm – Eat my own supper and clear away. 10.30 pm – Ahh time to sleep, in need of a goods
